The Department of Dance at Mason Gross School of the Arts presents works by distinguished faculty choreographers in “DancePlus Spring.” Part of a semiannual series, “DancePlus” will be at New Theater.

Three premieres by Mason Gross faculty choreographers will be presented. Christian von Howard’s new work entitled “This Will Hurt Nobody” is a visual feast of movement and features original work performed live by the composer Peter J. Saleh. In John Evan’s “Ghost Trees,” set to music by Michael Nyman and Michael Galasso, a duet is performed shrouded in the darkness of a forest. Randy James’ “the heart is a lonely hunter” will mesmerize and excite audiences with a cascade of 18 dancers literally leaving the darkness and coming into the light.

The concert will also feature a major revival of “FORMATS I and V” by Brenda Way. Reconstructed by faculty member Jeff Friedman, one of Way’s former dancers, these post-modern dances translate Randolph Coleman’s aleatoric musical scores into choreography.

Two guest artists are also participating. Wallie Wolfgruber choreographed and performs “Fuechtet Euch Nicht” (2007) to music by Kurt Weill and Samuel Pott choreographs the world premiere contemporary ballet piece entitled “Lurch Beneath the Surface” where the dancers throw themselves at each other through space.

The discounted student price expires two hours prior to curtain. New Theater is in the Mason Gross Performing Arts Center, 85 George Street (between Route 18 and Ryders Lane), on the Douglass Campus of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
