Artifacts Found at Stadium Excavation Site
PISCATAWAY —Excavation work at the Rutgers Stadium is turning up remnants of 18th-century structures. Thousands of found artifacts including wine bottles and ceramics eventually will be part of the historical documentation of the Raritan Landing settlement.
Raritan Landing was a port community located where Piscataway now stands. It was established in the early 1700s and encompassed a community of traders, merchants and others.
A glimpse into the population at the time can be gleaned by looking at the portion of the dig near where the stadium is being expanded.
For instance, two 18th-century residences on River Road about a quarter-mile from Landing Lane was owned by Joseph Reade and Samuel Moore. Reade has been identified in historical research as a warehouse owner, said Elizabeth Reeves, an assistant planner for Rutgers University, who is working on the project.
Near the south end zone of Rutgers Stadium remains of the Rising Sun Tavern and the Van Tine house, a residence believed to have been built in the 1700s, were also found.
