Elijah’s Promise Culinary School will host its second Farm to Table event at the Middlesex County EARTH Center, home to Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County. Located in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park, 42 Riva Ave. South Brunswick, the EARTH Center has a goal of educating central Jersey residents on the concept of environmental stewardship.
The object of the Farm to Table series is to bring attention to the value of purchasing fresh, locally grown produce, which reduces pollution created by shipping food long distances. Attendees also experience the preparation methods used by chefs to get the most enjoyment out of these seasonal crops. The food picked from the EARTH Center’s 12,000+ square-foot vegetable garden and prepared by Elijah’s Promise chefs will be available for tasting.
There is a $15 suggested donation for attending, and registration is required by June 13. Register by calling (732) 545-9002, Ext. 110 or by e-mail btaylor@elijahspromise.net. The event will take place rain or shine.

An area businessman is honoring his deceased mother through a fundraising event that will benefit cancer patients at a New Brunswick hospital.
Adithya Bathena, whose family owns the Buy Rite and Super Saver groups of wine and liquor stores, said the “Super Sampling” will take place on May 9 from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Hyatt hotel in New Brunswick.
The tasting event will provide more than 300 wines and microbrews from around the world and gourmet foods prepared at the Hyatt. Bathena said the company has sponsored such an event at the Hyatt in the past, but this was the first one that will benefit patients at the Cancer Center at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.
The Bathena family owns the Buy Rite franchise name, which has 41 locations around the state — including 11 in Middlesex County, one in Somerset and one in Union — and the SuperSaver name, which has five stores — including Highland Park, Edison, Somerville, Bound Brook, and Union. Adithya Bathena also owns stores within each group.
