NEW BRUNSWICK —Separate fires in New Brunswick on Monday rendered two houses uninhabitable and displaced 18 people. No injuries were reported.

The first fire occurred at 4:20 p.m. at a single-family home on 151 Seamon Street. Eleven people were displaced following the fire, which officials said started in a rear closet on the second floor.

New Brunswick fire Official William J. Petry said the exact cause of the blaze is still being investigated. The residents were placed in shelters by the Red Cross.

The second fire occurred at 10:19 p.m. at 223 Livingston Ave. when a sofa caught fire due to smoking on the third floor. The fire took out the roof of the structure, which collapsed into the second floor. Seven residents were displaced by the blaze, which was put out shortly after 2 a.m. Two residents, both Rutgers students, were given housing by the university. The remaining five were placed in lodgings by the Red Cross.

In both fires, the response time from the New Brunswick Fire Department, from first alarm to arrival, was two minutes or less.

A row of ten attached townhouses went up in flames yesterday on Simplex Avenue.
Firefighters worked to get out most of the hot spots.

Fire Chief Robert Rawls says 38 people were evacuated and are displaced. One child was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and another person was brought to the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital as a precaution. The fire started at about 7:30 a.m. and was brought under control around 10 a.m.

Firefighters are working to find a cause of the fire.
Red Cross officials were trying to find shelter for people whose homes were destroyed.
