Former New Brunswick official charged in plot to murder wife

From Newsday:

NEWARK, N.J. - Federal authorities charge a former New Brunswick public official with trying to hire a hit man to murder his wife.
Richard Kaplan is already serving a federal prison sentence for accepting more than $30,000 in bribes when he was New Brunswick’s city construction inspector and zoning officer.

U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie says the 58-year-old Kaplan asked a fellow inmate at the federal prison in Cumberland County to find someone to kill his wife, who was trying to divorce him.

The alleged hit man turned out to be an undercover federal agent. Kaplan allegedly told him he wanted his wife killed in a staged car accident.

Kaplan is serving a 30-month sentence and could face 10 more years in prison if he’s tried and convicted.

He could not immediately reached for comment on Thursday; authorities say he does not yet have an attorney.
