Rutgers Walk-Out

March 27, 20081:23 pm

Update from Targum:
The intermittent blare of car horns cut through the silence on George Street yesterday afternoon as hundreds sat quietly in the middle of an intersection. Traffic lights flashed yellow to red to green as protesters commemorating the five-year war in Iraq laid down their banners and megaphones for five minutes in hushed repose while dozens gazed at the impasse from sidewalks and downtown high-rises.

Protesters held up peace signs to impatient drivers as they waited out the minutes, each one symbolic of one year the U.S. has spent in Iraq.

The sit-in was part of an anti-war demonstration by University students and faculty as well as New Brunswick community members. The crowd took to the streets following a rally organized by the Walk Out Coalition.

Approximately 300 people marched in support of peace in the Middle East and ending the U.S. occupation of Iraq.

NJ Cell Phone Law Change March 1st

nomorecelluse.jpgThe law takes effect Saturday, March 1.

The State of New Jersey has just made driving while using a cell phone a primary offense. This means that a police officer can now pull you over solely because you were talking on the phone. This also includes text messaging! A conviction (or guilty plea) to this offense will be considered as a conviction/plea for “unsafe driving”. While this is a no-point violation, it carries a $250 surcharge meaning that this ticket can cost anywhere from $380 - $439 for a first offense!!

Makes a $40 blue tooth headset seem kind of cheap huh?
With the NJ deficit you can bet they will want all of those $250 surcharges they can get their hands on.

Corzine Drops 440 Toll

no440toll.jpg

EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) - Gov. Jon S. Corzine said Sunday he would likely drop Route 440 from his plan to significantly increase highway tolls to pay state debt and fund transportation projects.

Speaking at a public meeting in Middlesex County, Corzine drew applause from the crowd of about 500 when he said “I don’t think we will be moving forward with that aspect,” The Star-Ledger of Newark reported in a story posted on its Web site Sunday.

The governor later told a reporter: “I’m a practical guy. It’s (including Route 440) not happening. It’s not worth a lot of conversation.”
